Praise Be Unto Jesus!!
How grateful and thankful we are at Hope Ministries that once again the Lord has blessed the efforts of our Fundraiser Coordinator Peggy Breide, and the amazing team of volunteers in making our Fourth Annual Fundraiser a success.
We truly believe by faith in putting God first in all that we do, and knowing that all things are possible with Him.
So Thank you Lord, thank you Peggy, thank you to our awesome Contributors and team of Volunteers. Amen!
I would also like to acknowledge all our Friends and Supporters of Hope Ministries for giving us This Year,
Hope Ministries 20th Anniversary to the Glory of God….Amen!
I believe Paul’s concerns expressed to us in Romans 16; 17-20 is truly relevant. “I urge you brothers to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the mind of naïve people. Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you, but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.”
I pray that as time goes by we can all heed these words and surround ourselves with the brotherhood of believers to help edify and build each other up in the faith, until we all come to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
I believe God is preparing us at Hope Ministries to be available in helping all steer clear of obstacles in the days to come.
Blessings and Life, in Christ, Joe

Spring is upon us. I thank God He has me in Florida. The unbearable cold, snow and ice that the country experienced this winter remind me of my life in New England, which makes me even more grateful. It is amazing how each plant, tree, and flower has inbred in it knowledge of when and how to turn green, bloom or shed its leaves. God created all of these in the beginning with a purpose and plan and His plan will always be fruitful. God keeps the foliage and allows them to come through the harsh winter to bloom in spring.
When God created man, He made him to be a caretaker of His creations on this earth and to rely on Him for even the air he breaths. God did give him free will when He told man not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God's message is the same yesterday, today and forever. We have free will to heed the words of our Lord or walk on our own accord. His seed is planted in us by hearing the Word of God and living by Faith. Psalms 37: vs. 3-6 says. TRUST in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. DELIGHT yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. COMMIT YOUR WAY to the Lord: trust in Him. It is a choice by you.
Perhaps our choices have us in a world of disappointment, dismay, depression, deception or doubts. Hope Ministries directs us back to the Lord. He is the way, the truth and the life. His Word blooms in us and brings love, joy and peace back in our life through His Holy Spirit. Hebrews 12: 1-3. Sheila

LEW GERVAIS, ADDICTIONS/PASTORAL COUNSELOR
Recently someone from my old stomping grounds (Nassau Bahamas) called needing help for a young addict. Although we moved
to Florida twenty years ago I still occasionally get calls from people in Nassau needing help. There are still plenty of people on the islands who are becoming addicted to drugs and of course the age old drug of alcohol. I have seen too many families destroyed by addiction. It still upsets me when I see someone on a downward spiral into addiction or relapse. In many cases the affected person
is clueless to see the destruction that is waiting for them just around the corner.
Having been in this line of work for the last forty-plus years, I have seen several waves of addictions pass over me. The drug that took me down over four decades ago was heroin. I was held captive to needles and a powder injecting it into my veins four or five times a day, until in December of 72 when I believed in Jesus Christ, and surrendered myself to Him. Many of my friends died or ended up doing long prison sentences riding that wave of addiction.
When first moving to Nassau in 1985 to work with crack addicts, I found myself in the middle of a new wave of addiction. That wave had not yet reached the United States, but it almost destroyed an entire generation of Bahamians while I was living there. I watched that crack cocaine wave move into the United States by 1988 reaping its destruction all over the states in the next five years.
The next drug wave that blanketed the states was the meth wave of the 1990’s. That wave destroyed multiple families in the United States throughout the 90’s.
The next addictive wave of destruction that swept over the United States was the pain pill wave. For the past twelve years I have worked mostly with people addicted to pain pills along with the reemergence of heroin and synthetic heroin. I have seen too many people die from drug overdoses in the past fifteen years. The good news is that many people have been set free from their addiction when they started walking with Christ.
A new threat is on the horizon, and this appears to be the most hideous of all because it will be attacking a much younger clientele. The next wave of addiction I predict will be the marijuana wave. I know what you are thinking pot has been around for a long time. That is true, but with all the push to legalize, decriminalize, and eventually making it legal to smoke pot we will see this drug wave reach a much younger and more vulnerable generation (10-13 year olds). The fact that their brains are still developing at that age it sends shivers down my spine when I think of what will happen in the next ten years.
The newest thing happening in Colorado (now that pot is legal there) is what is called marijuana wax. They have found a way to extract the THC out of pot using butane. This process is dangerous because the fumes can easily ignite and blow up a house. People are dying in wax labs and the sad thing is that it is perfectly legal. The end product is pure THC and one hit will keep someone high for the entire day. Today you can walk into a head shop in Colorado and buy marijuana wax right off the shelves. What makes this so hideous is the fact that most Americans believe pot is not addictive and that it is completely safe to consume. People might not overdose and die from smoking pot or wax but there will be long lasting results down the road as the next generation grows up smoking it. I fear to think of the generation that is coming up behind them. I predict that they will be the most damaged generation ever. I hope I am wrong but somehow I don’t think so. Pray for our nation and especially for the kids who will grow up experimenting with marijuana wax.
CODEPENDENCY SUPPORT GROUP LINDA DIXON
The class is going very well and on schedule. We share our experience, strength and hope with each other and in so doing I look at my life then and now. After having read Lew’s contribution to this newsletter, I felt lead to share a little of my story. I grew up in a very dysfunctional home resulting in my introduction to cigarettes/nicotine. Sometime in my 15th year of life I started smoking. At first it was the “cool” thing to do, but then I “needed” it to get through the day. I had become addicted without a clue what that was. We were told (by the medical community) that it was not addictive, and nothing was said about effects to our lungs, heart, kidneys, etc. Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Lawyers, and many other professionals smoked back then.
In 1991 my sister (who also smoked) was told she had Cancer, which had started in her lungs and spread to the bone. The dangers of smoking were now becoming well known. She begged me to quit, so with a lot of Prayer and nicotine patches I did. My sister died on May 17, 1992. I didn’t smoke for a year, but sometime in 1993 I picked up a cigarette, and I have no idea why but I was right back where I was before. I had smoked for 32 years, then in 1994 at home alone seeking a word from God I opened my Bible to John 5 and boy did I get it. When I read the story of Jesus healing the lame man and what he said to him later I was immediately convicted and I haven’t smoked in 20 years. My Doctor recently told me I have COPD, of which today there is no cure, so there still can be far reaching cost. Nike’s slogan for Exercise is “Just Do It” My slogan regarding Addiction is “Just Don’t Do It” Please don’t listen or look to the World for your answers put your faith and trust in the only one who can renew our minds, and change a human heart; that is God!
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare of the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I am trusting Him. For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from the fatal plague. He will shield you with His wings. He will shelter you with His feathers. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. PSALM 91; 1-4
